The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the initiative “Wissenschaft im Dialog” (Science in Dialogue) suggest alternating topics to the public with regard to science and research. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.  It is one out of 16 judicially independent specialized agencies of the United Nations.  Today the UN, based in Paris, is made up of 193 member states.  Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international cooperation through education, science and culture.
The German UNESCO commission convened a national committee for the UN and World Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).  The committee coordinates the implementation of the World Decade in Germany.  Its management board comprises some 30 institutions and experts, e.g. representatives of the government or the federal states as well as NGOs, media, private economies and science.  About 1000 successful and innovative educational projects were declared official German contributions to the UN Decade by the national committee. http://www.unesco.de/333.html
